    The Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateur radio operators (hams) who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and resources for communications for public service when disaster strikes and during emergencies. Every licensed amateur is eligible for membership in ARES. The only qualification, other than the possession of an amateur radio license, is the desire to serve.

    The Western Massachusetts ARES serves 161 communities in all five counties (Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, and Worcester) through District Emergency Coordinators (DECs), Emergency Coordinators (ECs), and their assistants (AECs).
